1. Intent, Implementation & Impact
Our History Curriculum – Intent
Our History curriculum is designed to ensure that all pupils:
- Develop a secure chronological framework
- Acquire meaningful knowledge of local, national and world history
- Understand key historical concepts such as change, continuity, cause, similarity and difference
- Learn to use historical sources and evidence
- Build empathy and understanding of different lives, beliefs and experiences
History at our school supports pupils’ cultural capital, helping them place themselves within a wider historical narrative.
Implementation – How History Is Taught
History is taught through:
- Carefully sequenced units that build knowledge progressively from EYFS to KS2
- A two‑year rolling programme to support mixed‑age classes
- A strong focus on storytelling, discussion and enquiry
- The use of artefacts, images, historical sources and visits
- Opportunities for pupils to record learning in a range of ways
Lessons encourage pupils to question, interpret and reflect, rather than simply recall facts.
Key Historical Skills and Concepts
Across the school, pupils are taught to:
- Place events and people in chronological order
- Ask historically valid questions
- Identify cause and consequence
- Compare periods, people and places
- Use evidence from sources to support ideas
These skills are revisited and deepened throughout pupils’ time at the school.
History Beyond the Classroom
History learning is enriched through:
- Visiting historians and external providers
- Hands‑on artefacts and workshops
- Immersive theme days (e.g. The Great Fire of London)
- Local history and community links
These experiences bring history to life and help pupils understand that the past is something to be explored and questioned.
Impact – What History Gives Our Pupils
As a result of our history curriculum, pupils:
- Speak confidently about periods and events they have studied
- Show curiosity and respect for different ways of life
- Make thoughtful links between past and present
- Understand how history shapes identity and society
- Are well prepared for further study in secondary school
