Progression in Mathematics
At Aston Rowant, our mathematics curriculum is carefully sequenced to build secure knowledge over time. We follow a small‑steps progression, beginning with concrete exploration and moving towards deep conceptual understanding.
Our curriculum develops pupils’ fluency, reasoning, and problem‑solving from EYFS through to Year 6.
EYFS Progression
- Number songs, patterns, and early counting
- Comparing quantities
- Exploring shape, space, and measure
- Early problem‑solving through play
- Curiosity‑driven investigations outdoors (e.g., measuring sticks, noticing patterns
KS1 Progression (Years 1–2)
- Developing number fluency (number bonds, addition, subtraction)
- Multiplication through equal groups and practical contexts
- Early reasoning: explaining “why”
- Using CPA (Concrete–Pictorial–Abstract) to deepen understanding
Lower KS2 Progression (Years 3–4)
- Building secure understanding of formal written methods
- Deepening reasoning through puzzles, patterns and problem‑solving
- Developing independence and leadership (e.g., creating puzzles for younger pupils)
Upper KS2 Progression (Years 5–6)
- Mastery of advanced concepts: fractions, decimals, percentages
- Scale drawing, precision, engineering‑linked maths
- Multi‑step problem‑solving
- Preparing pupils for secondary mathematics
