c. Physical Health and Active Lifestyles
At our school, promoting physical health is a key part of our Personal Development offer. We recognise that regular, purposeful physical activity supports pupils’ physical fitness, emotional wellbeing, concentration and overall readiness to learn.
The Daily Mile
All pupils take part in The Daily Mile as part of the school day. This routine ensures that children engage in daily physical activity, helping them to develop stamina, resilience and healthy habits for life. The Daily Mile also supports pupils’ mental wellbeing by providing time for movement, fresh air and reflection, contributing positively to behaviour and learning attitudes.
As part of our commitment to promoting physical health and positive attitudes towards exercise, we run Skip to Be Fit, a whole‑school initiative designed to encourage enjoyment, perseverance and personal progress. Pupils are encouraged to skip at the start of the school day, helping them to become active, focused and ready to learn. In addition, a weekly whole‑school skipping session takes place on Fridays, where children time themselves and reflect on their performance.
The emphasis is firmly on personal progress, not competition. Pupils are encouraged to challenge themselves to improve gradually - often by aiming to complete just one more skip than the previous week. For some pupils, larger improvements are celebrated, but success is measured individually and positively.
Skip to Be Fit supports pupils to:
- Set personal targets
- Recognise effort and perseverance
- Build resilience and stamina
- Develop confidence through incremental success
This approach helps pupils understand that improvement comes through practice and determination, reinforcing a growth mindset and positive attitudes towards physical activity.
PE and Sport
Our PE curriculum is inclusive and enjoyable, encouraging pupils to work collaboratively, persevere with challenges and experience success. Pupils are supported to develop physical skills as well as confidence, teamwork and a positive attitude towards physical activity. Opportunities beyond timetabled lessons further promote active lifestyles and enjoyment of sport.
We aim for all pupils to develop an understanding of the importance of physical activity and to leave our school with a positive attitude towards maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
