b. Leadership, Responsibility and Pupil Voice

At Aston Rowant, we believe that personal development includes learning how to lead, serve others and take responsibility. Leadership opportunities are carefully planned and progressive, ensuring that pupils of all ages have the chance to contribute meaningfully to school life and develop confidence, empathy and a sense of purpose.

Leadership is not reserved for a small group of pupils; rather, it is embedded within everyday school life and reflects our inclusive values. Pupils are supported to learn that leadership can take many forms - through service, responsibility, kindness and positive influence.

Pupil Leadership Roles

Pupils are offered a wide range of leadership roles that grow in scope and responsibility as they move through the school. These include:

  • School Council representatives, elected from each year group, giving pupils a democratic voice in school decision‑making
  • Eco Warriors, also elected from each year group, promoting sustainability and care for the environment
  • Playground Leaders (Year 5), who support positive play, inclusion and cooperation during lunchtimes
  • Buddy roles, where older pupils support younger pupils, helping them feel safe, valued and confident
  • House Captains (Year 6), who lead house events, encourage teamwork and represent their teams across the school
  • Head Students for School Council and Eco Warriors (Year 6), providing leadership and coordination across pupil groups
  • School Librarian (Year 6), supporting reading culture and responsibility

These roles help pupils to develop communication skills, initiative, confidence and responsibility, while contributing positively to the wider school community.

Collective Worship and Spiritual Leadership

Leadership opportunities also extend into the spiritual life of the school. Year 6 pupils take responsibility for planning and leading whole‑school Collective Worship, developing confidence in speaking, reflection and service. For class worship, pupils across all year groups are encouraged to take turns leading, ensuring that opportunities for spiritual leadership are inclusive and progressive.

Peer Support and Mentoring

Our buddy system strengthens leadership through service and care for others:

  • Year 5 pupils support Year 2
  • Year 4 pupils support Year 1
  • Year 3 pupils support Reception
  • Year 6 pupils oversee and support these partnerships

These structured relationships help pupils develop empathy, responsibility and confidence while fostering a strong sense of belonging across the school community.

Impact of Leadership Opportunities

Through these roles, pupils learn to:

  • Take responsibility and show initiative
  • Communicate confidently and listen to others
  • Act as positive role models
  • Support and include others
  • Understand democracy, fairness and shared accountability

Leadership at Aston Rowant reflects our belief that every child has the potential to influence others positively, and that developing leadership is central to personal growth, character and preparation for future life.
