c. Special Art Projects: Coronation Mosaic
In 2023, our school community came together to commemorate a truly historic moment — the coronation of King Charles III. We wanted to create something lasting, meaningful and artistic that would celebrate this national event not only in the present, but for future generations of our Aston Rowant family.
After discussion with pupils, staff and families, the children chose a wonderfully creative idea:
A Whole-School Coronation Mosaic
Designing Our Mosaic
To begin, we launched a school-wide design competition, inviting every child to submit ideas for what our Coronation Mosaic could look like.
The response was incredible — full of colour, symbolism and imaginative detail.
We are delighted to celebrate our two talented winners:
· Lilly (Year 5)
· Daisy (Year 2)
Their combined design beautifully captured the spirit of unity, celebration and heritage we hoped to embody. It was vibrant, meaningful and immediately felt like the perfect choice for our commemorative artwork.
Creating the Mosaic – A Community Effort
Once the design was chosen, the project truly came to life.
Children from every year group, along with staff, parents and members of our wider school family, all took part in carefully placing individual mosaic tiles.
The process was:
- Collaborative - everyone contributed
- Inclusive - no piece was too small to matter
- Mindful & creative - children worked with focus, care and pride
- Joyful - there was a real buzz of excitement as the mosaic grew
Tile by tile, our school community transformed the winning design into a beautiful, lasting artwork.
Unveiling the Mosaic
Our Coronation Mosaic was officially unveiled during our Community Coronation Celebrations, surrounded by pupils, families, governors and friends of the school. It was a proud and joyful moment, marking not only a royal milestone but also a celebration of togetherness, creativity and school unity.
Children were thrilled to see the finished piece:
- Some spotted tiles they had placed themselves
- Others admired the colours, patterns and details
- Many spoke with pride about being part of something that would “still be here when new children come to school”
A Legacy for Aston Rowant
The mosaic now stands as a permanent reminder of:
- A historic national celebration
- The creativity of our pupils
- The strength and warmth of our school community
- Our commitment to leaving something meaningful for future generations
It is a testament to teamwork, artistry and the joy of shared achievement.
