5. SCHOOL INITIATIVE: Pyjama Day for Wycombe Homeless Connection

During Children in Need Day, pupils noted how fortunate they were to have warm beds, safe homes and cosy pyjamas. They suggested a pyjama day with purpose, choosing to support Wycombe Homeless Connection - a charity providing emergency accommodation, advocacy, practical support and pathways out of homelessness for vulnerable people.

What They Did

  • Identified a need
  • Chose the charity themselves
  • Decided how to raise money
  • Shared the importance of safe homes in assemblies
  • Raised £320
  • Reflected deeply on dignity, safety and compassion toward the homeless

Why This Matters

This project was born from a moment of reflection: children recognising how blessed they are to have warm beds, safe homes and comfortable pyjamas. They made the profound connection that many people do not have these basic dignities — and chose to act.

Supporting Wycombe Homeless Connection, which provides emergency shelter, advocacy, practical support and pathways out of homelessness, helped pupils understand:

  • Dignity and human worth
  • The Christian call to shelter the vulnerable
  • Justice, fairness and compassion
  • The reality of local need
  • How generosity transforms lives

Raising £320 was wonderful - but far more important was the spiritual and moral growth shown. Children learned that when they act together, with kindness and purpose, “the rest is Aston Rowant School.” This is the lived expression of our vision.

The children were invited by Oxford Diocese to a special church service in Christ Church Cathedral to speak of the work of Courageous Advocacy that we do in school and particularly this project.
