Intent
To equip children with strategies to stay safe around roads, vehicles and public spaces.
Implementation
Brake Road Safety Charity - Brake campaigns for safer roads, healthy journeys and supports victims of road collisions. They lead national awareness initiatives such as Beep Beep! Day for younger children.
Be Bright Be Seen Day - Children learn about visibility, reflective clothing and safe travel in winter months.
School Travel Plan - Promotes walking, cycling and sustainable travel.
Walk to School Week - Part of Brake’s national push to reduce harm and encourage healthy movement.
Cycle Training & Proficiency - KS2 undertake cycle skills and safe road cycling.
Impact
Children become knowledgeable, responsible and safety-conscious road users.
Impact includes:
- Understanding of dangers around roads, supported by Brake’s national campaigns
- Safer travel habits during Walk to School Week and throughout the year.
- Increased visibility awareness through Be Bright Be Seen.
- Confident cyclists, following cycle proficiency and practical skill-building.
- Hazard identification, both as pedestrians and cyclists.
- Understanding of road victim support, linking with Brake’s wider work raising awareness of road safety and harm reduction.
Children demonstrate responsible behaviours that protect themselves and others - a key safeguarding outcome.
