b. Our Music Curriculum (Charanga)

We teach Music through the Charanga Musical School Scheme, a high-quality, progressive curriculum designed to develop musicianship from EYFS to Year 6.

Charanga provides:

  • A sequenced scheme covering listening, singing, improvisation, composition and performance
  • Diverse music styles: classical, popular, world music, jazz, folk and contemporary
  • High-quality digital resources and backing tracks
  • Clear progression of musical knowledge and skills
  • Opportunities for notation, vocal work, tuned/untuned percussion and ensemble performance
  • SEN-inclusive approaches using repetition, modelling and scaffolded tasks

Through Charanga, children learn:

  • Pulse, rhythm, pitch, tempo and timbre
  • How to use instruments and voice musically
  • To improvise and compose using tuned and untuned instruments
  • To notate music in simple and later staff formats
  • To listen and appraise music across cultures and time periods
  • To work together as musicians

Charanga supports a spiral curriculum, enabling children to revisit and deepen key concepts each year.
