d. Eco & Sustainability in Geography
Through geography and eco education, we help pupils understand not only the world as it is, but the role they can play in shaping its future.
At Aston Rowant School, sustainability and environmental responsibility are woven through our geography curriculum and wider school life. We aim to ensure that pupils not only understand environmental issues, such as climate change and biodiversity, but also feel empowered to take action as responsible global citizens.
Learning about the environment is purposeful, practical and ongoing, supporting pupils’ personal development, wellbeing and sense of collective responsibility.
Climate Change and Environmental Awareness
Geography provides a key context for helping pupils understand climate change in an age‑appropriate and thoughtful way.
Pupils learn about:
- How human activity affects the environment
- Weather patterns, climate and global change
- Renewable and non‑renewable resources
- Sustainable choices and environmental responsibility
These themes are revisited and deepened as pupils move through the school, allowing understanding to grow alongside maturity and awareness.
Learning is rooted in real‑world contexts, helping pupils understand that climate change is a global issue with local implications.
Biodiversity and Conservation
Our curriculum places strong emphasis on biodiversity, habitats and conservation, taking full advantage of our local environment and outdoor learning opportunities.
Through geography, Forest School and Eco initiatives, pupils:
- Learn about local and global habitats
- Understand why biodiversity matters
- Explore how environments are protected and managed
- Develop respect for living things and natural spaces
Being located in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty significantly enhances pupils’ understanding of conservation and the importance of protecting natural landscapes.
Pupil Leadership – Eco Warriors in Action
Pupil voice and leadership are central to our approach. Our Eco Warriors are elected representatives who meet regularly to:
- Discuss environmental issues affecting school life
- Plan and lead Eco initiatives and campaigns
- Share ideas and promote sustainable behaviour
Eco Warriors play a visible role within the school, supported by our Eco Board in the main cloakroom. This display shares information, celebrates achievements and sets challenges, helping pupils understand that sustainability is a shared responsibility.
Whole‑School Action and Community Impact
Eco learning extends beyond the classroom into everyday school life and the wider community.
Key initiatives include:
- A weekly Eco Challenge shared in the school newsletter, encouraging children and families to take small, meaningful actions at home
- Annual whole‑school initiatives, such as Green Day, raising awareness and celebrating positive environmental action
- Regular reflection on impact, helping pupils understand how their actions make a difference
These initiatives ensure that learning translates into behaviour and supports strong home–school partnerships.
Forest School and Sustainability
All pupils take part in Forest School every Friday, with regular whole‑school Forest Friday events bringing the community together outdoors.
Forest School supports sustainability learning by:
- Encouraging respect for nature
- Teaching responsibility for outdoor environments
- Supporting wellbeing through nature connection
- Reinforcing conservation and care for the natural world
These experiences deepen pupils’ understanding that environmental responsibility is lived, not just learned.
Recognition and Commitment
Our commitment to eco education is recognised through national accreditation. We are proud to hold:
- The Eco Schools Award
- The Green Tree School Award
These awards reflect sustained action, strong pupil leadership and embedding sustainability across the curriculum.
Impact on Pupils
As a result of our integrated approach to eco learning, pupils:
- Speak confidently about environmental and climate issues
- Demonstrate care and responsibility for their surroundings
- Take pride in leading and supporting Eco initiatives
- Understand their role in protecting the planet
- Apply learning at school, at home and in the wider community
Eco and sustainability learning strengthens pupils’ sense of agency, responsibility and belonging.
