In EYFS
Children develop early physical literacy through:
- Balance, agility, coordination
- Running, jumping, throwing, catching
- Movement to music
- Dance, climbing, outdoor play
- Early teamwork, turn-taking and spatial awareness
In Key Stage 1
Children build fundamental movement skills through:
- Gymnastics: shapes, rolls, balances, travelling
- Games: sending, receiving, striking and kicking
- Athletics: jumping, sprinting, agility
- Dance: simple sequences
- Outdoor activities and problem-solving
They begin to understand rules, tactics and working together.
In Lower Key Stage 2
Children refine skills and apply them in context:
- More complex gymnastics sequences
- Invasion games (finding space, marking, attacking/defending)
- Athletics: speed, stamina, throwing technique
- Dance: structure, expression and control
- Outdoor adventurous challenges
In Upper Key Stage 2
Children apply skills tactically and work with increasing independence:
- Competitive team games (football, netball, tag rugby, hockey, rounders)
- Advanced gymnastics and dance composition
- Leadership, officiating and tactical thinking
- Athletics for performance
- Orienteering and team problem-solving
