At our school, safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility, and attendance plays a vital role in keeping children safe. Children who attend school regularly are more visible to trusted adults, more supported in their wellbeing, and better protected from potential risks outside school. 

We monitor attendance closely as part of our safeguarding duties. This includes: 

• Daily checks on unexplained absences 
  We follow up promptly when a child is not in school and no reason has been provided. 
  First day calling is a key part of our safeguarding approach. 

• Monitoring patterns of absence 
  We look for repeated absences, broken weeks, or concerning patterns that may indicate a child or family needs support. 

• Working with families early 
  When attendance concerns arise, we work sensitively with parents and carers to understand needs and remove barriers. Early help is offered where appropriate. 

• Escalating concerns when necessary 
  If we believe a child may be at risk, or if attendance does not improve despite support, we follow our Child Protection procedures and may involve external agencies such as Oxfordshire County Council, Early Help, or Social Care. 

• Supporting vulnerable pupils 
  We ensure that children with additional needs, SEND, medical conditions, or family challenges have tailored support to keep them attending, engaged, and safe. 

Why Attendance Is a Safeguarding Matter 

Poor attendance can be a sign that a child is experiencing difficulties. Regular absence may mean a child is:

• Missing out on key relationships with trusted adults
• Experiencing neglect, family stress, or unsafe situations
• Struggling with mental health or emotional wellbeing
• Facing barriers that the school can help to address

By keeping attendance high, we help children stay connected, supported, and safe.
