British Values Day 2020 - VE Day 75

Intent

To recognise the 75th anniversary of VE Day by helping pupils appreciate the values of freedom, democracy and community spirit, especially during a year marked by national challenges. We aimed to support wellbeing as well as understanding.

Implementation

  • Distanced or virtual activities depending on restrictions
  • Story-based learning about wartime experiences and community support
  • Creative tasks such as bunting, flags, peace doves and remembrance artwork
  • Democracy activity: voting on designs, songs or games
  • Rule of Law: exploring why rules existed on the Home Front
  • Sharing reflections and photos with families to maintain community connection

Impact

Pupils developed empathy for the wartime generation and expressed gratitude for freedoms today. They clearly linked rules to safety and fairness. Despite restrictions, the whole school community felt connected, and pupils demonstrated resilience, kindness and positivity.
