British Values Day 2021 - Community, Courage & Coming Together

Intent

British Values Day 2021 focused on helping pupils understand how Democracy, the Rule of Law, Individual Liberty, Mutual Respect and Tolerance shape everyday life in Britain. After the challenges of the pandemic, the day aimed to rebuild community, celebrate diversity and empower pupils to recognise their role in contributing to a fair and caring society. Learning centred on responsible choices, community kindness and understanding differing viewpoints.

Implementation

  • Whole-school assembly exploring the meaning of British Values in “real life” — from voting and teamwork to fairness, kindness and respecting differences
  • Class-based activities including designing community posters, writing “Kindness Charters”, and exploring how rules keep everyone safe
  • Democracy link: Each class held a mini-election to choose a class project (e.g., artwork, charity focus, playground improvements)
  • Individual Liberty activity: Pupils created “My Voice Matters” speech bubbles expressing what they would change or champion in their school community
  • Mutual Respect & Tolerance tasks: Story sessions featuring characters from different cultures and families, followed by discussions about similarities, differences and fairness
  • Rule of Law games: Fair-play sports challenges, team problem-solving activities, and exploring why shared rules help everyone
  • Community involvement: Classes wrote thank-you letters or designed cards for local volunteers, care workers or neighbours as part of a “Community Gratitude Wall”
  • Creative expression: Children created collaborative murals representing unity, hope and diversity, showing what “Being British Today” means to them.

Impact

Pupils developed a stronger understanding of how British Values guide behaviour, decisions and relationships. They learnt that everyone has a voice, and that fairness, kindness and shared rules help communities thrive. Activities deepened pupils’ understanding of diversity and difference, encouraging empathy and open-mindedness. The day strengthened pupils’ sense of belonging, promoted positive citizenship and improved confidence in expressing ideas respectfully. Classes reported improved teamwork, more thoughtful discussions and a greater awareness of how small actions contribute to a safe, caring school and wider community.
