Understanding Our Pupils 

We know our pupils well and carefully consider the barriers some children may face. These can include: 

• Developing vocabulary and language skills to fully access the curriculum 
• Gaps in prior knowledge and wider experiences 
• Attendance and engagement challenges for a small number of pupils 
• Building confidence, resilience and independence as learners 
• Access to enrichment opportunities beyond the classroom 

By understanding these barriers, we ensure our support is targeted and meaningful.

We carefully identify and respond to the barriers our pupils may face. These can include: 

• Emotional wellbeing and mental health needs (including bereavement and anxiety) 
• Special educational needs and neurodevelopmental differences 
• Lower attendance for a small number of pupils 
• Gaps in vocabulary and prior knowledge 
• Financial barriers to participation in school experiences

Our first priority is ensuring consistently strong teaching: 

• Teachers adapt learning so all pupils can access the same ambitious curriculum 
• Explicit teaching of vocabulary and language supports pupils across all subjects 
• High-quality modelling, questioning and scaffolding support success for all learners 

Targeted support where needed 

We provide additional support when necessary, including: 

• Carefully planned interventions matched to specific needs 

• Pre-teaching and opportunities to revisit learning 

• Regular review of support to ensure it is making a difference 

Supporting the whole child 

We recognise that success is about more than academic outcomes: 

• Strong focus on attendance, working closely with families 
• Pastoral support to build confidence, wellbeing and readiness to learn 
• Ensuring all pupils can access trips, clubs and enrichment opportunities
