Mathematics

Mathematics at Aston Rowant is lively, joyful and rooted in our Christian vision of Growing Together. We believe every child is a mathematician, and our curriculum is designed to nurture curiosity, build deep understanding and help children approach new challenges with confidence and resilience. Our teaching reflects our school values - Gratitude, Resilience, Outreach, Wonder, Trust and Harmony - and these values shape the way children think, talk and learn mathematically.

From the very start of their learning journey, children explore mathematics through rich, hands-on experiences. In EYFS, children investigate number, shape and measure through play, outdoor exploration and meaningful real-life contexts. They notice patterns in nature, compare lengths in the outdoor area, and talk enthusiastically about “what they notice” and “what they wonder,” developing early reasoning skills.

As children move through school, their mathematical thinking deepens. They solve problems using the Concrete–Pictorial–Abstract (CPA) approach, experimenting with manipulatives, visual representations and written methods to secure strong conceptual understanding. They learn to articulate ideas clearly, justify their reasoning, and approach challenges with resilience - understanding that mistakes help the brain grow and that there are many ways to solve a problem.

Mathematics at Aston Rowant is creative and collaborative. Pupils lead, support and inspire one another: solving problems together, building shapes, setting puzzles for younger year groups, measuring, designing, constructing and investigating the world around them. Whether they are creating 3D shapes, designing scale blueprints, exploring fairground games, or taking part in whole-school maths events, children experience mathematics as something exciting, practical and deeply connected to real life.

Throughout the year, we enrich maths through Maths Days, themed weeks, cross-class challenges, outdoor learning and financial education workshops, helping children see that maths has purpose and power in the world beyond the classroom.

Most importantly, our children see themselves as mathematicians - curious learners who think deeply, ask questions, persevere through challenge and feel proud of their achievements.

Mathematics at Aston Rowant is not just a subject: it is a journey of discovery, creativity, joy and growth.
