Curriculum
Ambitious. Connected. Creative. Rooted in our Christian vision.
At Aston Rowant CofE Primary School, our curriculum is carefully designed, coherently sequenced and ambitiously pitched so that every child, including those with SEND, develops the knowledge, vocabulary and cultural capital they need to thrive both now and in the future.
Our curriculum is shaped explicitly by our Christian vision - Growing together, rooted in God, enjoying fullness of life - and as a result it focuses on the whole child, developing pupils academically, socially, morally, spiritually and emotionally.
We provide a broad and balanced curriculum that gives pupils deep, secure understanding across all subjects. Each subject has clear progression, ensuring that knowledge and skills build systematically over time, regardless of pupils’ starting points.
Ambitious for All Learners
Our curriculum is designed so that:
- All pupils can access high-quality learning, including those with SEND
- Teaching builds pupils’ knowledge, vocabulary and understanding over time
- Learning is revisited so that important content is remembered, not merely encountered
- Pupils develop confidence, independence and aspiration
- No child is limited by background, need or prior attainment
Creative, Connected and Purposeful
We bring learning to life through a creative curriculum that makes meaningful links across subjects without losing each discipline’s integrity. Pupils are active participants in shaping aspects of their learning; they contribute ideas, raise questions and help frame aspects of classroom enquiry. This builds ownership, curiosity and intrinsic motivation while ensuring sound academic progression.
Children regularly reflect on what they have learned and take part in discussing their next steps, helping them become thoughtful, reflective learners able to talk confidently about their progress.
Spiritual Development Through Awe, Wonder & Big Questions
Aston Rowant places spirituality at the heart of learning. Across the curriculum, children encounter opportunities to:
- Experience awe and wonder in the natural world
- Engage with “What’s in the News?” to understand current events and global perspectives
- Explore nature through Forest Friday and outdoor learning
- Respond to big questions about life, purpose and responsibility
- Reflect on beauty, creativity, justice and their role in caring for God’s world
We respond thoughtfully and spontaneously to significant events - a snow day, an eclipse, breaking news or a moment of natural curiosity - transforming them into powerful, memorable learning opportunities.
Preparing Children for Life in Modern Britain
Our curriculum supports pupils to:
- Develop strong British Values
- Think critically and compassionately
- Understand their place in both the local community and wider world
- Engage with issues of justice, fairness and courageous advocacy
- Become articulate, ethical citizens who make a positive difference
Reading, Knowledge & Enrichment at the Core
Reading is at the heart of our curriculum. Pupils access a rich range of high-quality texts that build vocabulary, deepen knowledge and open windows into diverse experiences and cultures. Enrichment weeks, educational visits, visitors and special events strengthen and extend curriculum learning.
A Curriculum That Helps Children Flourish
Our curriculum enables children to flourish as:
- Knowledgeable learners with secure foundations
- Compassionate individuals with strong moral purpose
- Creative thinkers with imagination and curiosity
- Responsible citizens who understand their influence in the world
- Unique individuals who can speak confidently about who they are and what they believe
It is through this carefully crafted, ambitious and values-driven curriculum that our children truly grow together, rooted in God, equipped for the fullness of life.
