b. Progression in Maths

Progression in Mathematics

At Aston Rowant, our mathematics curriculum is carefully sequenced to build secure knowledge over time. We follow a small‑steps progression, beginning with concrete exploration and moving towards deep conceptual understanding.

Our curriculum develops pupils’ fluency, reasoning, and problem‑solving from EYFS through to Year 6.

EYFS Progression

  • Number songs, patterns, and early counting
  • Comparing quantities
  • Exploring shape, space, and measure
  • Early problem‑solving through play
  • Curiosity‑driven investigations outdoors (e.g., measuring sticks, noticing patterns

KS1 Progression (Years 1–2)

  • Developing number fluency (number bonds, addition, subtraction)
  • Multiplication through equal groups and practical contexts
  • Early reasoning: explaining “why”
  • Using CPA (Concrete–Pictorial–Abstract) to deepen understanding

Lower KS2 Progression (Years 3–4)

  • Building secure understanding of formal written methods
  • Deepening reasoning through puzzles, patterns and problem‑solving
  • Developing independence and leadership (e.g., creating puzzles for younger pupils)

Upper KS2 Progression (Years 5–6)

  • Mastery of advanced concepts: fractions, decimals, percentages
  • Scale drawing, precision, engineering‑linked maths
  • Multi‑step problem‑solving
  • Preparing pupils for secondary mathematics
