a. What Does It Mean to Be Part of a Church School?
Growing together, rooted in God, enjoying fullness of life (Colossians 2:1–7)
Being a Church of England school is far more than a historical label or a religious affiliation — it is a living identity that shapes our ethos, our curriculum, our relationships, and the daily experience of every child and adult in our community.
At Aston Rowant, we are proud to belong to a tradition that began in 1811, when the Church of England committed to providing education for every child, regardless of background, circumstance or belief. That founding principle continues to guide us today:
We welcome all families - Christian, other faiths, or none.
Our school community is wonderfully diverse. Every child is valued as unique, created in the image of God, and deserving of dignity, respect and love. Inclusivity is not simply something we do - it is who we are.
Our Christian foundation enhances, enriches and elevates school life.
Our theologically rooted vision, taken from Colossians 2:1–7, shapes:
- The relationships we build
- The curriculum we teach
- The way we live out our values
- Our aspirations for every member of our community
Our Christian ethos is not an “add-on.” It infuses the entire life of the school and helps us cultivate a learning environment where every child can flourish academically, spiritually, morally and socially.
A Distinctively Christian School Where All Flourish
As a Church school, we embrace the call to help every child live with:
- Wisdom and understanding
- Compassion and courage
- Hope and resilience
- Integrity and joy
These qualities are woven through our values, relationships, pastoral care and curriculum.
Our Christian vision expresses our deepest hope: that every child at Aston Rowant grows deeply rooted, confidently flourishing and generously outward-facing, ready to contribute positively to the world God loves.
SIAMS & Our Christian Distinctiveness
Church of England schools are inspected under the Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools (SIAMS) framework. SIAMS asks a central, searching question:
“How does the school’s theologically rooted Christian vision enable pupils and adults to flourish?”
This question lies at the heart of our self-evaluation, leadership and strategic development. To ensure our Christian distinctiveness is lived out fully and meaningfully:
- Our vision drives decision-making, policy and curriculum design.
- Worship is planned, monitored and developed with theological depth.
- RE is a core subject with high expectations and rich content.
- Relationships reflect our commitment to dignity, respect and community.
- Children are encouraged to reflect, think deeply and grow spiritually.
- Staff wellbeing and professional development are supported through our vision.
- Our links with the parish strengthen our shared mission.
We are committed to ensuring that our Christian identity is not symbolic, but transformative - shaping lives, guiding actions and enabling every member of our community to thrive.
In Summary
To be part of a Church school is to belong to a community that:
- Is guided by a deeply rooted Christian vision
- Welcomes every child and family with warmth and respect
- Seeks excellence, kindness and wisdom
- Encourages big questions, deep reflection and courageous hope
- Promotes the flourishing of all - academically, spiritually and personally
This is what it means to be Aston Rowant CE Primary School.
