e. Green Tree School Award

We are delighted to hold the Green Tree School Award, an accolade from the Woodland Trust celebrating our dedication to woodland learning, biodiversity and connecting children to the natural world. This award recognises the depth and quality of our outdoor education and the way we nurture awe, wonder and respect for God’s creation.

Through tree related projects, outdoor worship, creative activities and woodland exploration, pupils experience meaningful opportunities to understand and care for the environment.

🌲 Our Green Tree School Activities

🌱 Tree Planting and Woodland Care

Each year, pupils take part in tree planting sessions, helping expand our natural spaces and learning how trees support the ecosystem. They:

  • Plant saplings
  • Water and care for young trees
  • Monitor their growth
  • Learn about carbon capture and climate change

This long term project helps children see the impact of their actions from one year to the next.

🦋 Habitat Creation and Stewardship

Pupils help design, create and maintain habitats across the school grounds, including:

  • Miniwoodland habitats
  • Log piles and bug havens
  • Bird feeding areas
  • Wildflower patches for pollinators

These efforts improve biodiversity and give children authentic opportunities to study wildlife.

🙏 Outdoor Learning in the Willow Circle

Our Willow Circle provides a beautiful natural space for learning, reflection and spiritual development. Children gather here for:

  • Pupilled prayers
  • Collective worship themes
  • Moments of quiet reflection
  • Seasonal celebrations

Learning outdoors encourages stillness, gratitude, and a deeper connection with creation.

🎨 Woodland themed creative learning

Children regularly use natural materials for art, storytelling and design. Examples include:

  • Leaf and bark rubbings
  • Nature sculptures
  • Woodland poetry and descriptive writing
  • Building small dens or story scenes

These activities blend creativity with environmental appreciation.

🌍 Participation in national environmental challenges

As part of the award, pupils frequently take part in Woodland Trust activities, such as:

  • “Plant a Tree for the Jubilee”
  • “Branching Out” creative tasks
  • Nature spotting and tree identification trails

Completing these challenges earns points towards the award and helps pupils feel connected to a national movement.

🍃 A Culture of Outdoor Learning

The Green Tree School Award highlights something at the heart of our school:
Outdoor learning is deeply embedded in our curriculum, vision and values.

It contributes to wellbeing, spiritual growth, environmental understanding and children’s sense of place in the world.
