a. A Culture that enables flourishing

At Aston Rowant C E Primary School, children flourish because they are part of a culture where the Christian vision is not simply spoken - it is lived. Our vision of “Growing together, rooted in God, enjoying life in all its fullness” shapes every decision, every relationship and every experience. Personal Development at Aston Rowant is not delivered in isolated programmes but is embedded through a coherent, intentional and transformational whole-school approach.

This is exactly what Toby Long, Deputy Director of Education at ODBE, recognised when he said:

There is an exceptionally well-established Christian vision which is lived out at every turn. This acts as a golden thread across all aspects of the school… The vision is embedded and is contextually accurate, noticeably meeting the needs of the school community.

This “golden thread” is visible across all elements of our Personal Development offer.

1. Leadership & Vision

Our leadership team ensures the vision is present in every aspect of school life - strategic decisions, curriculum choices, worship themes, behaviour expectations and relationships. Staff model the values daily, creating a consistent, safe and nurturing environment where every child is known and believed in. This consistency enables pupils to feel secure enough to grow in confidence, resilience and identity.

2. Wellbeing as the Foundation

Our wellbeing ethos - “Wellbeing is at the heart of everything we do” - ensures every child feels safe, seen and supported, allowing pupils to flourish academically, socially and emotionally.

This nurturing foundation strengthens pupils’ confidence to take risks, express themselves and develop strong relationships.

3. Outdoor Learning & Forest Friday

Forest Friday provides weekly opportunities for awe, wonder, courage, teamwork and spiritual connection with creation. Children gain resilience, independence and environmental responsibility - key elements of flourishing and character development.

4. Eco Education & Stewardship

Through Eco Warriors, the Eco Schools Award, Green Tree School status and weekly Eco Challenges, pupils learn stewardship, responsibility and advocacy for the planet. This builds gratitude, outreach and harmony, aligning perfectly with your Christian vision.

5. Courageous Advocacy

Pupils of all ages learn how to use their voices responsibly. Class projects, charity choices, Connecting Classrooms, advocacy writing and independent initiatives help pupils become compassionate, active citizens. They demonstrate empathy, moral understanding and a sense of justice, which are core elements of flourishing in modern society.

6. Character, Citizenship & British Values

British Values Days, alongside ongoing curriculum integration, help pupils understand democracy, fairness, equality, responsibility and respect. Children do not simply learn about British Values - they live them, demonstrating them through behaviour, leadership and service. This strengthens their identity as responsible citizens and global neighbours.

7. Curriculum Enrichment & Cultural Capital

Through rich experiences such as Music Enrichment Week, Garsington Opera, authors, artists, museums, performances, fieldwork, and cross-curricular projects, children gain confidence, aspiration and cultural breadth. These opportunities support personal growth, self-expression and joy.

8. Spiritual Development & Collective Worship

Daily worship, prayer, reflection and values teaching help pupils deepen their spirituality, sense of purpose and understanding of right and wrong. Space is created for silence, wonder, gratitude and compassion, which strengthens inner wellbeing and moral character. This is a central driver of flourishing.

9. Character Development & Values-Led Behaviour

Our values (Gratitude, Resilience, Outreach, Wonder, Trust, Harmony) shape all aspects of behaviour and relationships. Pupils learn kindness, forgiveness, responsibility and teamwork - essential characteristics for lifelong flourishing. Our wellbeing website page emphasises how children flourish because they are nurtured in an environment where they are supported to become “curious, confident and resilient.”

10. A Culture That Enables Children to Flourish

Across leadership, worship, wellbeing, British Values, courageous advocacy, outdoor learning, enrichment and values-led teaching, the message is unmistakable:

Our Christian vision is not aspirational. It is transformational.

Children flourish here because the vision is lived out consistently and intentionally by every member of the school community.

This coherence, this depth, and this authenticity is what makes Aston Rowant a community where children grow into confident, compassionate, articulate and morally grounded young people - ready for life’s next steps.
