a. Intent, Implementation and Impact

Music At Aston Rowant Our Music Curriculum is designed to ensure it is fully inclusive to every child. Our aims are to fulfil the requirements of the national curriculum for Music; providing a broad, balanced and differentiated curriculum designed to develop a lifelong love of Music, performance and creativity. We believe that a high quality Music education provides children with the foundations for understanding, negotiating and interpreting the world through beauty, awe and wonder.

Intent

We aim to provide a rich and varied curriculum to challenge and meet the needs of all our children. We believe all pupils should be taught essential aspects of Music. From EYFS to KS2 our pupils will develop a holistic view of music in the aspects of Performing, Composing, Appraising, Listening and Applying. In each unit pupils will visit different aspects of these musical elements, building on previous knowledge and experience. As children progress through the school they will grow their technical skills in Music and demonstrate this in a range of activities both collaborative and individual. Through enrichment weeks, visits from external sources and opportunities to experience and engage in out of school performances the children are given a deep appreciation for the application of music in the wider world and are given opportunities to make links to other subjects. Through wisely planned lessons children are immersed in Musical vocabulary. Teachers challenge pupils through individually planned opportunities.

Implementation

The music curriculum ensures children sing, listen, play, perform and evaluate. This is embedded in the classroom through the structured music programme Music Express as well as the weekly singing assemblies, various concerts and performances, musical clubs and teaching from specialist music teachers. The elements of music are taught in the classroom lessons so that children are able to use some of the language of music to dissect it, and understand how it is made, played, appreciated and analysed. In the classroom children learn key aspects of music through crosscurricular links. They also learn how to compose, focusing on different dimensions of music, which in turn feeds their understanding when listening, playing, or analysing music. Staff seek to improve their own technical music skills and understanding through participating in Staff workshops and training opportunities. The curriculum is reviewed and evaluated through assessment, staff meetings and professional discussions.

Impact

Whilst in school, children have access to a varied programme, which allows them to discover areas of strength, as well as areas they might like to improve upon. The integral nature of music and the learner creates an enormously rich palette from which a child may access fundamental abilities such as: achievement, self-confidence, interaction with and awareness of others, and self-reflection. Music will also develop an understanding of culture and history, both in relation to children individually, as well as ethnicities from across the world. Children are able to enjoy music in as many ways as they choose – either as listener, creator or performer. They can dissect music and comprehend its parts. They can sing and feel a pulse. They have an understanding of how to further develop skills less known to them and are encouraged to pursue personal interests in their own Musical experiences.
