Intent

At Aston Rowant we aim to ensure all children:

  • Gain secure knowledge of place, space, environment and scale
  • Build geographical skills, including map work, fieldwork, data collection and analysis
  • Understand human and physical processes and how they shape places
  • Appreciate diversity, cultures and global interconnection
  • Develop Christian values such as Gratitude for creation, Wonder for the natural world, and Outreach through global citizenship
  • Experience high-quality fieldwork that builds a strong sense of place and belonging

Implementation

We deliver Geography through:

  • The Kapow Primary mixed-age rolling programme (Cycles A & B)
  • Carefully sequenced units that revisit key concepts and vocabulary
  • Regular fieldwork, especially through Forest School, nature walks, local village studies and orienteering
  • Hands-on map work using atlases, digital mapping tools, OS maps, aerial photos
  • Cross-curricular links to Reading, Science, RE, Maths, Art and Forest School
  • Inclusive teaching that supports SEND pupils through visual scaffolds, practical tasks and vocabulary pre-teaching
  • Opportunities for global learning and courageous advocacy

Impact

We measure impact through:

  • Pupil voice capturing enjoyment, curiosity and understanding
  • Book looks and floor books showing progression in enquiry skills
  • Retrieval and vocabulary checks
  • Assessment of fieldwork skills and the use of maps
  • Advanced geographical thinking in KS2: patterns, cause/effect, comparison, data interpretation
