Intent
At Aston Rowant we aim to ensure all children:
- Develop a curious and questioning mindset about the world
- Gain secure knowledge of place, space, environment and scale
- Build geographical skills, including map work, fieldwork, data collection and analysis
- Understand human and physical processes and how they shape places
- Appreciate diversity, cultures and global interconnection
- Develop Christian values such as Gratitude for creation, Wonder for the natural world, and Outreach through global citizenship
- Experience high-quality fieldwork that builds a strong sense of place and belonging
Implementation
We deliver Geography through:
- The Kapow Primary mixed-age rolling programme (Cycles A & B)
- Carefully sequenced units that revisit key concepts and vocabulary
- Regular fieldwork, especially through Forest School, nature walks, local village studies and orienteering
- Hands-on map work using atlases, digital mapping tools, OS maps, aerial photos
- Cross-curricular links to Reading, Science, RE, Maths, Art and Forest School
- Inclusive teaching that supports SEND pupils through visual scaffolds, practical tasks and vocabulary pre-teaching
- Opportunities for global learning and courageous advocacy
Impact
We measure impact through:
- Pupil voice capturing enjoyment, curiosity and understanding
- Book looks and floor books showing progression in enquiry skills
- Retrieval and vocabulary checks
- Assessment of fieldwork skills and the use of maps
- Advanced geographical thinking in KS2: patterns, cause/effect, comparison, data interpretation
- Pupils who can talk confidently about their local area, the UK and the wider world
