Intent
At Aston Rowant, our History curriculum aims to:
- Spark curiosity and wonder about the past
- Help children understand how the past shapes today’s world
- Develop secure historical disciplinary knowledge
- Build chronological understanding through a progressive, connected sequence
- Celebrate diversity through Black History Month, global studies and inclusive narratives
- Provide cultural capital through trips, visitors, VR and hands-on experiences
- Reflect our Christian values by encouraging gratitude, understanding and respectful enquiry
Implementation
- Kapow mixed-age Cycle A and B rolling programme
- Carefully sequenced substantive and disciplinary knowledge
- High-quality teaching supported by enquiry-based questions
- Explicit vocabulary instruction
- Use of high-quality primary & secondary sources
- Regular low-stakes recall for long-term memory
- Inclusive provision enabling SEND learners to access and succeed
- Rich enrichment: immersive days, visitors, VR headsets, artefacts
- Strong links to school values, PSHE, RE & British Values

We assess impact through:
- Pupil voice (“I can talk about history confidently and remember what I’ve learned”)
- Book looks focused on disciplinary skill development
- Knowledge checks and retrieval
- Monitoring of progression across mixed-age cycles
- Evidence of curiosity, questioning and resilience
- The extent to which disadvantaged/SEND pupils keep up and catch up
- High engagement during enrichment and celebration events
- Children demonstrating secure, connected knowledge of periods studied
