Sports Premium at Aston Rowant C of E Primary School
At Aston Rowant, our Sports Premium funding is used strategically and effectively to secure sustainable improvements in physical education, physical activity, health and school sport. Our aim is to ensure every child - regardless of background, need or starting point - develops confidence, competence and enjoyment in being active, now and for life.
We invest our funding in high-quality provision that strengthens teaching, increases pupil participation, develops staff expertise, improves physical literacy, and broadens the range of sporting opportunities our children experience.
How We Use Our Sports Premium Funding
1. High-Quality PE Lessons Delivered by JR Sports (Twice Weekly for All Classes)
JR Sports coaches provide specialist teaching that enhances physical literacy, technical skill development, and teacher professional knowledge.
This ensures:
- Consistent, high-quality instruction in every year group
- A carefully sequenced curriculum taught by specialists
- Upskilling for teachers through team-teaching and observation
- Improved confidence and competence across all pupils
Pupil reflections show the impact of high-quality coaching during enrichment:
- “I balanced for ages! I didn’t know I could do that!” (EYFS)
- “In sport we don’t give up. That’s resilience” (Year 6)
2. Twice-Weekly Active Lunchtime Clubs (JR Sports)
Sports Premium enables structured lunchtime activity sessions run by JR Sports, increasing daily physical activity and supporting less-active pupils.
Benefits include:
- Increased participation during unstructured times
- Development of stamina, coordination and teamwork
- Opportunities for children to practise skills taught in lessons
- Positive lunchtime behaviour and engagement
Children frequently mention the fun, inclusiveness and confidence they feel during coached activities:
- “Everyone had a turn - even the people who don’t like sport normally.” (Year 6)
3. 1:1 and Small-Group Development Sessions
Funding is used to provide targeted support for pupils who need:
- Confidence-building
- Additional coordination and movement support
- Social and emotional development through physical activity
- Stretch and challenge for more able pupils
This ensures PE is truly inclusive, enabling all children to access, succeed and enjoy their learning.
4. Sports Enrichment Week (Annual Whole-School Event)
A significant portion of funding supports our PE Enrichment Week, which is a highlight of the school year and hugely impactful for pupil wellbeing, confidence and participation.
Activities across 2023–2025 include:
- Circus skills
- Sumo suits, zorbing and inflatables
- Street dance and cheerleading
- Karate workshops
- Yoga and mindfulness movement
- Colour Runs
- Nerf team games
- Sports Day celebrations
The Pupil Voice evidence is overwhelmingly positive:
From 2023:
- “I tried things I’d never done before.” (Whole School)
- “Spinning the plate was hard but then I did it!” (Year 1)
- “Skipping is harder than it looks — but fun!” (Year 3)

These enrichment weeks promote:
- Physical activity for all
- Character development (resilience, teamwork, bravery)
