2. Early Help & Family Support

At our school, we believe that early support makes the biggest difference in helping children attend school regularly and thrive. Early Help is about working with families as soon as challenges arise—before difficulties grow and begin to affect a child’s wellbeing, learning, or attendance.

Our Early Help Approach

We offer a supportive and non-judgemental approach, working with families to understand what’s happening and identify practical ways forward. This may include:

  • Listening to children and families to understand any barriers to regular attendance
  • Meeting with parents or carers to develop personalised attendance support plans
  • Providing pastoral and emotional support for pupils in school
  • Adjusting routines or expectations for children who need a gradual re-integration
  • Signposting to external support where specialist help may benefit the family

Working in Partnership

We work closely with:

  • Oxfordshire County Council Early Help services
  • Family support workers
  • Health professionals (GPs, School Nurses, CAMHS)
  • SEND services
  • Community organisations and wellbeing charities

These partnerships help us ensure that children receive timely and coordinated support.

When Early Help Might Be Offered

We may offer Early Help if a child’s attendance begins to drop or if there are signs a family may need support, such as:

  • Frequent absences (authorised or unauthorised)
  • Difficulties with morning routines or anxiety about coming to school
  • Changes at home that may be affecting the child’s wellbeing
  • Medical, emotional, or behavioural needs
  • Persistent lateness

How Early Help Supports Attendance

Early Help can help children:

  • Feel more confident about coming to school
  • Manage anxiety or emotional challenges
  • Improve routines and sleep habits
  • Access additional support for learning or wellbeing
  • Strengthen relationships between home and school

For families, Early Help provides:

  • A single point of support
  • Clear guidance and practical strategies
  • A chance to work in partnership with school
  • Access to wider services if needed
