British Values Day 2023 - Coronation Celebration

Intent

To mark the historic Coronation of King Charles III by helping pupils understand national traditions, continuity and leadership, while exploring how democracy, unity and respect are expressed during national events.

Implementation

• Pupils explored the question “What is a coronation?” and learned about the Coronation Regalia and ceremony
• Discussions around leadership, promises and service
• Mixed-age celebrations featuring maypole dancing, country dancing, letters to the King and creative crafts
• School unveiling of the commemorative mosaic created by pupils and staff together
• EYFS created crowns and flags; KS2 explored continuity and change across coronations

Impact

Pupils developed historical understanding of national ceremonies and reflected respectfully on the values of service, harmony and unity. Cooperation across age groups was excellent. The mosaic stands as a lasting testament to community involvement and pupils’ deepened understanding of British identity.
