British Values Day 2024 - D-Day 80th Anniversary

Intent

Our goal was to help pupils explore how individual liberty, democracy and collective responsibility were fundamental to the events of D-Day. We aimed to build understanding of how these values continue to shape modern Britain.

Implementation

  • Whole-school worship on Tolerance and respecting different beliefs · Singing the National Anthem and wartime songs
  • Mixed-age workshops on:
  1. Rule of Law: designing fair-play games
  2. Respect & Diversity: belonging-quilt squares
  3. Democracy: “If I were Prime Minister…”
  4. D-Day Coding: maps with 3D boats and coding sequences
  • Staff linked British Values to school values such as resilience and outreach
  • Pupils used stories, film clips and discussion to understand fairness and cooperation

Impact

Pupils demonstrated strong empathy and understanding of the values protected during WWII. They collaborated exceptionally well in mixed-age groups, showing fairness, patience and inclusion. Staff observed improved confidence in speaking and listening. Creative outcomes and pupil reflections showed deepened understanding of democracy and freedom.
