British Values Day 2025 - VE Day 80th Anniversary

Intent

To help pupils understand how freedom, democracy and unity were upheld during WWII and to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day in a meaningful, age-appropriate way. We aimed to connect past events with the British values we live by today.

Implementation

  • Whole-school reflection on courage, sacrifice, and the value of freedom
  • Singing wartime songs such as We’ll Meet Again to build community spirit
  • Cross-school workshops included:
  1. Mapping VE Day events and simple timelines
  2. Rule of Law activities illustrating fairness and safety
  3. Respect & Diversity quilt squares
  4. Democracy activity: “If I were Prime Minister…”
  • EYFS explored kindness and helping others; KS2 explored justice, leadership and historical context
  • Activities linked VE Day themes to modern values of peace and cooperation

Impact

Pupils showed empathy for the wartime generation and clearly linked British Values to real historical events. Discussions demonstrated understanding of freedom, fairness, and responsibility. Mixed-age teamwork strengthened respect and inclusion, and reflections showed pride in contributing to national remembrance.
