6. Support in our school
At Aston Rowant CE Primary School, we are committed to ensuring that every child receives the right support at the right time. We use the graduated approach—Assess, Plan, Do, Review—to provide a continuum of support that meets each pupil’s individual needs. This includes universal (Wave 1) provision for all pupils, targeted (Wave 2) interventions for those who need additional help, and specialist (Wave 3) support for pupils with more complex or significant needs. This structure reflects expectations set out in the SEND Code of Practice and SEND Information Report requirements.
Wave 1: Universal Support
Universal provision is what every child receives as part of high-quality teaching. This forms the foundation of learning for all pupils and is fully inclusive.
Our Wave 1 support includes:
- High-quality, adaptive teaching in every classroom.
- Differentiated planning to ensure lessons are accessible to all learners.
- Visual aids, scaffolds and clear routines to support understanding.
- Positive behaviour and emotional-wellbeing strategies embedded across the school.
These approaches ensure that all children, including those with emerging needs, can participate and thrive within the classroom.
Wave 2: Targeted Support
Wave 2 support is for children who need more help than their peers to make expected progress. These pupils may not have a formal SEND diagnosis but benefit from short-term or focused additional support.
Targeted support may include:
- Small-group interventions in reading, writing, maths or phonics.
- Speech and language support through structured programmes.
- Social skills groups led by trained staff.
- Additional adult support within lessons to address specific barriers.
Support is reviewed regularly as part of the graduated approach to ensure it remains effective and appropriate.
Wave 3: Specialist Support
Wave 3 support is for pupils with more significant or complex needs who require personalised and specialist provision. This often involves external professionals.
Specialist support may include:
- 1:1 personalised intervention programmes.
- Advice, assessment or direct input from:
- Speech and Language Therapy
- Educational Psychology
- Occupational Therapy
- Autism Advisory Services
- Physical Disability or Sensory Impairment Teams
- Individual learning plans tailored to a child’s specific strengths and difficulties.
Wave 3 support aligns with statutory expectations that schools provide personalised and intensive help where needed, as outlined in SEND regulations and the SEND Information Report framework.
Interventions We Offer
Our interventions are reviewed regularly to ensure they are effective and evidence-based. Examples include:
- Phonics and early reading interventions
- Precision teaching for rapid skill development
- Speech and language programmes following specialist recommendations
- Fine and gross motor skills support
- Social, emotional and mental-health interventions
- Maths fluency and reasoning groups
These interventions may be delivered by class teachers, teaching assistants, the SENCO or specialist professionals depending on the child’s needs.
Staff Expertise & Training
Our staff team is committed to ongoing professional development so that all pupils, including those with SEND, receive high-quality, informed support. SEND Information Reports must outline staff expertise and training, and we ensure our practice reflects this expectation.
Staff training includes:
- Annual safeguarding and SEND updates
- Training in autism, ADHD, dyslexia and communication needs
- Speech and language strategies
- Supporting pupils with sensory needs
- Behaviour and emotional-regulation approaches
- Training from external specialists when specific needs arise
The SENCO receives additional accredited training and works closely with staff to develop expertise across the school.
Pupil Voice: Hearing From Our Learners
Pupil voice is a key expectation within SEND practice and a requirement within the SEND Information Report. Schools must ensure pupils contribute to planning and reviewing their support.
At Aston Rowant CE Primary School, pupils are actively involved in shaping their own support. We do this by:
- Talking with pupils about their strengths, challenges and aspirations.
- Including pupils in reviews of their targets (in an age-appropriate way).
- Ensuring pupils understand their next steps and how adults will help them.
- Providing opportunities to share views through surveys, learning conversations and SEND review meetings.
- Encouraging pupils to evaluate what helps them learn best.
Listening to pupils helps us to tailor support effectively and fosters independence and confidence.
