4. Safeguarding Information (AgeAppropriate Learning)

Safeguarding is at the heart of our school ethos. We teach children how to stay safe, make responsible choices and understand their rights — all in an age-appropriate way that supports their wellbeing. This learning also reinforces key British Values, particularly Individual Liberty, the Rule of Law, Mutual Respect, and Tolerance. 

Below is an outline of the safeguarding themes children learn about through PSHE, assemblies, class discussions and the wider curriculum. 

Personal Boundaries 

We teach children that: 

  • They have the right to personal space, privacy and bodily autonomy 

  • They can say “no” if something feels uncomfortable 

  • Other people’s bodies and boundaries must also be respected 

This supports: 

  • Individual Liberty — understanding their rights over their own bodies 

  • Mutual Respect — recognising and respecting the boundaries of others 

Safe and Unsafe Choices 

Children learn how to make safe, informed decisions in everyday situations, including: 

  • Road safety, water safety and staying safe near people they do not know 

  • Understanding unsafe secrets versus surprises 

  • Knowing when to seek help 

These lessons link strongly to: 

  • Rule of Law — understanding rules that keep everyone safe 

  • Individual Liberty — making safe and responsible choices 

Trusted Adults 

We help children identify the adults who keep them safe and whom they can speak to if they are worried. This includes: 

  • Teachers and support staff 

  • Pastoral and safeguarding leads 

  • Parents and carers 

  • Other trusted adults in the community 

This supports: 

  • Individual Liberty — encouraging children to ask for help and express concerns 

  • Mutual Respect — understanding that adults care for and protect them 

Online Safety 

Children learn how to: 

  • Use technology responsibly 

  • Protect personal information 

  • Recognise unsafe online behaviour 

  • Report concerns to a trusted adult 

This reinforces: 

  • Rule of Law — learning that online spaces also have rules 

  • Individual Liberty — choosing safe, positive online behaviours 

Healthy Relationships 

Across the curriculum, children explore what makes relationships safe, respectful and positive, including: 

  • Kind words and actions 

  • Listening, sharing and resolving conflict safely 

  • Understanding consent in an age-appropriate way 

This promotes: 

  • Mutual Respect 

  • Tolerance of different views, backgrounds and family structures 

Recognising Worries and Seeking Help 

We support pupils to: 

  • Identify feelings of worry or discomfort 

  • Know who they can talk to 

  • Understand that speaking up is a strong and positive action 

This directly supports: 

  • Individual Liberty — giving children the confidence to voice concerns 

  • Mutual Respect — building a culture where everyone feels safe 

Why This Matters 

By teaching safeguarding in this structured, age-appropriate way, children learn: 

  • Their rights, their responsibilities, and how to make safe choices 

  • How laws and rules help protect everyone (Rule of Law) 

  • How to respect others while expecting respect in return (Mutual Respect) 

  • That everyone has the freedom to speak up and be safe (Individual Liberty) 

Safeguarding education ensures that every pupil grows into a confident, resilient and responsible young person who understands how to keep themselves and others safe.
