1. Pupil Leadership – Democracy in Action

Pupil leadership is a vital part of our school community. We believe children should experience democracy first hand and have genuine opportunities to shape their school. Many of our leadership roles are elected by the pupils themselves, giving every child a voice and a chance to participate.

Below are the key leadership roles our pupils undertake and how they contribute to school life.

House Captains

Elected by their peers.

At the start of each year, pupils vote to elect their House Captains. Candidates present their ideas in speeches or posters, then pupils experience the democratic process by casting their votes.
House Captains:

  • Encourage teamwork and positive behaviour within their house

  • Lead and motivate their teams during competitions and sports events

  • Help organise house assemblies and celebrations

  • Represent the views of their house during school events

They develop confidence, leadership and responsibility.

School Council Members

Elected by their peers.

The School Council is a central forum for pupil voice. Each class votes for their representatives through a ballot system.

School Councillors:

  • Meet regularly with staff to discuss school improvements

  • Gather pupil views on curriculum, behaviour, events and resources

  • Drive whole-school projects such as charity days, school environmental improvements or wellbeing initiatives

  • Feedback decisions to their classes

This helps children understand representation, fairness and how democratic decisions are made.

Eco Warriors

Elected by their peers.

Eco Warriors promote sustainability and care for the environment. Following a class vote, elected members take on responsibilities such as:

  • Conducting environmental audits of classrooms

  • Encouraging recycling and energy saving

  • Supporting gardening and outdoor learning projects

  • Leading initiatives such as “SwitchOff Weeks” or litter-picking events

They help the whole school work towards a greener future.

Playground Leaders

Playground Leaders volunteer or are selected to support younger children during break times.
They:

  • Organise inclusive games and activities

  • Encourage fair play and cooperation

  • Help resolve minor disagreements calmly

  • Promote positive behaviour outdoors

This role builds responsibility, communication skills and peer relationships.

Collective Worship Leaders

These pupils support the spiritual life of the school.
They:

  • Help plan and lead assemblies

  • Prepare resources, readings or prayers

  • Welcome visitors and support younger children during collective worship

  • Share reflections linked to values, respect and kindness

They help model the school’s ethos and values in daily life.

Librarians

School Librarians help keep reading at the heart of school life.
They:

  • Organise and care for books

  • Recommend reading to younger children

  • Help run library sessions and special reading events

  • Promote a love of reading across the school

This develops responsibility and a passion for literacy.

School Buddy System

Our Buddy System supports younger or new pupils as they settle into school life.
Buddies:

  • Act as positive role models

  • Help younger children on the playground

  • Support new arrivals as they learn routines

  • Promote kindness, friendship and inclusion

This system strengthens community, empathy and mutual care.

Democracy Lived Out

Through these leadership roles, our pupils experience democracy not just as a lesson topic, but as a real part of daily school life. They vote, campaign, collaborate, lead and make decisions together — developing a strong sense of responsibility, fairness and belonging.
