The Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE) 2025 guidance outlines clear and comprehensive responsibilities for the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL), ensuring that all schools maintain strong, effective safeguarding processes. The DSL is accountable for managing referrals, including liaising with children’s social care and other external agencies to ensure timely and appropriate action. They are also responsible for maintaining accurate, secure and detailed safeguarding records, in line with statutory expectations. In addition, the DSL must play a key role in raising awareness across the school community—ensuring

policies are understood, accessible and embedded in daily practice—and must coordinate and oversee safeguarding training so that all staff remain fully informed of their duties under current legislation.
