week beginning 01.06.20

This week try and follow this tutorial – how to draw a bee.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ho4aUHY6fss

Label the different parts.

What other minibeasts can you draw and label?

This week we will be beginning our new topic on Plants and Insects. Learning is always best when it is hands on. If possible plant a sunflower or bean seed into a small pot, (any seed will do but these tend to grow quite quickly!) Talk about what it will need to grow. You may want to experiment with several seeds trying out different conditions eg: no water, no light.  Continue to look after your seed ready for next weeks task. If it starts to grow before next week take photos and measurements in cm or cubes.

Week 1: take pictures on a local walk or in your own garden of the different types of plants you see. Talk about the different parts of the plant. what is the same/different about each plant? If possible look at emerging plants and notice changes over the week. What do you notice, do some grow faster or better than others? Why do you think this is? Your child may wish to draw a plant and label the different parts. Give your drawing a title and explanation. Don't forget to send your photos in if you want them on our website!

Week 2: Your seed should have started to sprout by now. For this week keep a day by day diary of any changes you are noticing. Draw what you see and write a sentence or two to go with it. We look forward to seeing your diaries!

Week 3: Continue with your diaries this week. If you have experimented with different growing conditions learn more through research on the internet about what has happened and why? What are the differences you can see in the plants? Draw the different plants and write a sentence in your diary about what happened.

Topic Learning objectives for Foundation Stage are:

Children know about similarities and differences in relation to living things. They talk about the features of their own immediate environment and how environments might vary from one another.

Children look closely at similarities, differences, patterns and change. They make observations of animals and plants and explain why some things occur, and talk about changes (and give some reasons).

They select and use technology for particular purposes.

Week 4: Encourage your child to find out some facts about the mini-beasts they find on their walk or in their garden. Where do they like to live and why? How does their body move?

Star Challenge: Make a mini-beast museum with labels telling people some facts about each mini-beast. (Remember to put them back afterwards).
