h. Parent Support in Maths
“That’s not how we did it when I was at school!”
We know that confident parents help create confident mathematicians. Here are ways you can support your child’s learning.
What You Can Do at Home
- Practise number bonds and times tables regularly
- Cook together to explore measures
- Spot patterns and shapes in the environment
- Encourage your child to explain their thinking
- Praise effort, not speed (“Tell me how you figured it out”)
These reinforce our school approach to maths.

Understanding the CPA Approach
Your child may use:
- Concrete objects (counters, cubes)
- Pictorial images (bar models, drawings)
- Abstract numbers and symbols
This matches their learning journey in school.
How to Help Without Confusion
- Ask your child to show you their method
- Avoid teaching older algorithms too early
- Use school language (“tens and ones”, “exchange”)
- Watch the White Rose videos for the current unit
