f. UK Parliament Week​​​​​​​

Intent

To embed democratic understanding and political literacy from KS1 upwards.

Implementation

During UK Parliament Week, children learn:

  • What Parliament is
  • How laws are made
  • The roles of MPs, Lords and committees
  • How citizens influence decisions
  • How voting works

Activities include:

  • Class debates
  • Mock elections
  • Researching famous MPs
  • Watching UK Parliament Learning videos
  • Writing to local representatives
Impact

Through UK Parliament Week, pupils develop strong political literacy, a clear understanding of British democracy, and the confidence to participate in it.

Impact includes:

  • Understanding of law-making, Parliament’s structure and democratic processes, supported by UKPW materials such as ballot boxes, booklets and activities.
  • Ability to debate respectfully, presenting arguments and listening to opposing views.
  • Knowledge of representation, including MPs, Lords and committees.
  • Confidence in expressing opinions, knowing their voice matters.
  • Developed British Values, especially democracy, rule of law and individual liberty.
  • Links to courageous advocacy, as children learn how citizens influence decisions.

Children leave primary school equipped to engage meaningfully in civic life - a hallmark of strong personal development.
