Intent
To embed democratic understanding and political literacy from KS1 upwards.
Implementation
During UK Parliament Week, children learn:
- What Parliament is
- How laws are made
- The roles of MPs, Lords and committees
- How citizens influence decisions
- How voting works
Activities include:
- Class debates
- Mock elections
- Researching famous MPs
- Watching UK Parliament Learning videos
- Writing to local representatives
Impact
Through UK Parliament Week, pupils develop strong political literacy, a clear understanding of British democracy, and the confidence to participate in it.
Impact includes:
- Understanding of law-making, Parliament’s structure and democratic processes, supported by UKPW materials such as ballot boxes, booklets and activities.
- Ability to debate respectfully, presenting arguments and listening to opposing views.
- Knowledge of representation, including MPs, Lords and committees.
- Confidence in expressing opinions, knowing their voice matters.
- Developed British Values, especially democracy, rule of law and individual liberty.
- Links to courageous advocacy, as children learn how citizens influence decisions.
Children leave primary school equipped to engage meaningfully in civic life - a hallmark of strong personal development.
